Different citation styles have different requirements for citing patents, so check with your professor to find which style they prefer. Below, you can see examples of patent citations in MLA and APA styles.

To cite a patent in MLA, you need:

  • The patent holder’s name (formatted Last Name, First Name)
  • The patent title
  • The patent number
  • The date the patent was issued (formatted Day Month Year)

Then arrange that information in order: Last Name, First Name. “Patent title.” Patent number. Date Issued.

  • MLA style example: Williams, Dave. "Screw less clip mounted computer drive." Patent 6,885,550. 26 April 2005.

To cite a patent in APA, you need:

  • The name of the patent holder (formatted Last Name, First Initial)
  • The year the patent was issued
  • The name of the patent (optional)
  • The patent number (italicized)
  • The location of the Patent and/or Trademark office

Then arrange that information in order: Last Name, First Initial. (Patent year). Optional patent title. Patent number. Patent office location.

NOTE: APA does NOT require the title in a patent citation. However, if your professor still wants to include this, place the title between the Patent year and the Patent number.

  • APA style example: Williams, D. (2005). U.S. Patent No. 6,885,550. Washington, DC: U.S.
