The behavior you describe is normal. When we return results for a search, not all of the results are de-duped. As you scroll through the pages, the system is updating and removing repetitive results. The system does not know exactly how many total results there are until it finishes the process. At this point, the last page updates and displays with the correct number of results. At this point, the total number of results has become smaller than displayed on the previous pages.
